Mardi Gras is the one thing everyone in the U.S. knows the state of Louisiana for. Almost every town and city in the state has its own Mardi Gras celebration. Houma, LA is no different, and for 2023 Houma has planned a huge celebration you don’t want to miss.

Houma, Louisiana’s Mardi Gras Celebrations

Short of New Orleans, Houma has one of the largest, Mardi Gras celebrations in the state. The city doesn’t hold back when it comes to great food, great music, and a whole lot of fun. For 2023, Houma is keeping the party going for 11 whole days. Staring on February 10 Houma has scheduled a dozen parades with a host of marching bands, colorful floats, and amazing throws for attendees to catch. 4 Fun Facts About Mardi Gras

  • Technically Mardi Gras only refers to Fat Tuesday, but Mardi Gras season starts on January 6th and ends at midnight on Fat Tuesday. Afterward, the 40 days of lent begin.
  • Mardi Gras isn’t just celebrated in Louisiana. In Brazil the period between January 6th and Fat Tuesday is known as Carnival. Just like here, it’s a time of decadence and indulgence where fun, music, and food abound.
  • Even though New Orleans has become synonymous with Mardi Gras celebrations in the United States, it wasn’t the first city in North America to celebrate the holiday. Mobile, Alabama hosted the first Mardi Gras celebration on American soil in the early 1700s.
  • Although you can make your own king cake, it’s traditionally only available during the Mardi Gras season. The decadent cake is made using brioche bread dough, then braided and laced with cinnamon.
