Celebrate Cajun Folklore At The Rougarou Fest

Rougarou Fest

Have you ever seen a Rougarou around Houma? This werewolf-like creature has the head of a dog or a wolf and the body of a human being. If you’ve ever seen one, you’d remember it. If you’ve yet to see one in person (or even if you have), you need to go to Rougarou Fest in downtown Houma on Oct. 20 to 21. It runs from 10 am. to 10 p.m. on the first day and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the second day.

This is one of the wildest festivals on this side of the Mason-Dixon, and you do not want to miss it. From the costume contest to the parade, it is full of fun at every turn.

The Costume Contest

The costume contest at Rougarou Fest is one of the wildest, craziest events you’ve ever seen. USA Today ranked it as one of the Top 10 Costume Parties in the United States. This year’s contest will be on Oct. 20 at 5 p.m., right on the courthouse steps.

The categories are:

  • Pets
  • Most creative
  • Funniest
  • Scariest
  • Movie characters
  • Kids’ costumes for ages 5 and under
  • Kids’ costumes for ages 6 to 12

Then, there is the best overall.

Take out your spookiest, funniest, or zaniest costume and enter the contest. Just enter early. Only 100 entries are allowed in each category, so get there at 2 pm. to register.

Oh, and if you don’t enter the contest, wear your costume anyway. Rougarou Fest is a big party, and you know what a party needs. More costumes!

The Krewe Ga Rou Parade

How do you follow up an event as popular as the costume contest?

With the Krewe Ga Rou Parade, of course. The parade is second only to the costume contest when it comes to bringing the fun. It rolls out on Oct. 20 at 7 p.m., and it is known for its wild costumes and floats. Think elaborate Rougarous walking the streets with other fun costumes. You can enter the parade, or you can just sit back and enjoy it.

Just be careful. A stray Rougarou or two has been known to break formation and mingle with the crowd. Keep your loved ones close. You never know what a Rougarou might do.

Is That a Zombie?

Rougarou Fest is known for having some of the best Cajun cuisine in Louisiana. Not everyone will be up for the Cajun food, though. Take the Rougarou Zombies, for instance. They are more into brains. They’ll be dancing through the streets of Houma, trying to get some snacks to power them through the event. If you don’t want to fight them off, join them. The festival can always use some new zombies.

Rougarou Fest is the biggest party you’ve ever seen. There is also live music and so much more. You want to make sure you make it there, and a new vehicle from Barker Buick GMC in Houma, Louisiana, can help. Pick out your new car, truck, or SUV, and put the festival’s location in your GPS. Then, you’ll be partying with other Rougarous in no time at all.
