Have you been feeling the urge to get out of your house and into nature? A nature walk is a great way to enjoy the outdoors while learning about different plant and animal species. Pack a bag, load up the family, and hit one of these five nature trails in Houma this weekend:
Mandalay National Wildlife Refuge Nature Trail
Established in 1996, Mandalay provides refuge and seasonal homes for various rare species of migratory birds and waterfowl using the Mississippi Flyway. The nature trail covers a 4,419-acre freshwater marsh and nature refuge located five miles outside of Houma. The sanctuary is accessible by boat and walking path from Bayou Black Road and highway LA-182. Be prepared to see an abundance of wildlife, including alligators, wading birds, ducks, and bald eagles.
Bayou Teche National Wildlife Refuge Boardwalk
Established in 2001, the Bayou Teche NWR is located in St. Mary Parish in Franklin and features recreational activities such as paddling, fishing, wildlife viewing, hiking, and hunting. The 9,028-acre refuge is a habitat for wading birds, waterfowl, songbirds, reptiles, and amphibians.
LUMCON Boardwalk
Managed by the Louisiana University Marine Consortium, the LUMCON features a 175-yard boardwalk located on highway LA-56 in Cocodrie. The LUMCON has plenty to explore, including an aquarium and a 65-foot observation deck, overlooking acres of marshes and ponds. The wildlife includes mullet, Gulf killifish, blue crabs, blue and green herons, pelicans, gulls, otters, and alligators.
The Marguerite Moffett Audubon Sanctuary
The Marguerite Moffett Audubon Sanctuary protects 108 acres of the marsh near Chauvin, between Bayou Petit Caillou and Bayous Grand Caillou and Sale. To reach the access point, park on the west side of highway LA-56 in Terrebonne Parish. Follow the signs to the 700-foot-long boardwalk and observation platform, which overlooks Lake Quitman. This site is known for its incredible bird-watching opportunities.
Lockport Trail
Lockport Nature Trail is for those looking for a short stroll through the cypress swamp on an elevated boardwalk. It’s no more than 5 minutes, but it is worth the journey. You can access the walkway off highway LA-308 in north Lockport.
