2020 GMC Terrain Vs. 2020 Toyota Highlander

A black GMC Terrain SUV against a cityscape at twilight.

When you’re choosing which crossover SUV  you’re going to cruise around Houma in, the choice between a two-row model like the GMC Terrain and a three-row model like the Toyota Highlander is a big one. Let’s compare these two SUVs to see why the GMC Terrain is favored by so many drivers.

Performance

Powering the 2020 GMC Terrain is a Turbocharged 1.5-liter I4 that offers a potent 170 horsepower and 230 pound-feet of torque; powering the 2020 Toyota Highlander is a heft V6 engine with 295 horsepower and 263 pound-feet of torque. Though the Highlander’s engine is undoubtedly more powerful, it comes at the cost of fuel efficiency, and it’s powering a much larger car. That kind of power would be unnecessary in the more compact Terrain, which is far more fuel-efficient than the Highlander while still offering more than enough power for zippy highway acceleration and city cruising alike.

Interior

The most visible difference between the GMC Terrain and the Toyota Highlander is the number of seats. While the Terrain always has five seats, the Highlander can be equipped with up to eight seats or seven in upper trims. But unless you have enough passengers to fill those seats all of the time, they become unnecessary, taking up space and causing you to drive a bigger car than you really need. The GMC offers enough seats for an average-sized family and is also perfect for drivers without children in the back seat. The interior of the Terrain is well-designed and offers top-tier amenities throughout the trim levels.

Safety Features

Both SUVs offer quite a few driver assistance features to help keep you safe while you drive. The GMC Terrain offers automatic emergency braking, forward collision alert, following distance indicator, lane-keep assist with lane departure warning, IntelliBeam® headlamps, front pedestrian braking, adaptive cruise control with a camera, and rear parking assist.

The Toyota Highlander has a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with steering assist, lane tracing assist, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, road sign assist, and cyclist detection.
