Famous Houmaians

You think that no one famous comes from Houma, but that’s far from the truth. Throughout history, Houma has been home to countless famous people, and four of them stand out. Who knows? You might be the next famous person to call Houma home.

Brandon Jacobs

Brandon Jacobs was born in Houma in 1982. He might not live there anymore, but his time in Houma prepared him to become a franchise player for the New York Giants. Jacobs had many nicknames during his playing career, including the Juggernaut and The Creator. You can also add “Houmaian” to the list of nicknames.

Tab Benoit

When Tab Benoit was born in Houma in 1967, no one knew how big he would make it. The guitarist and singer became part of The Louisiana Music Hall of Fame in 2010, and he’s taken home three Blues Music Awards. He’s also a huge activist. If you’ve never listened to his music, now it’s time to change that. Give it a listen to see what this hometown boy can do with a guitar and his voice. His mixture of swamp, soul, and Chicago blues is a real treat.

Johnny Hartman

Johnny Hartman might not be around anymore, but he sure made an impact when he was alive. When he died in 1983, the 60-year old jazz singer had an impressive resume. He’d collaborated with John Coltrane and recorded with Erroll Garner. He’d also been a member of Dizzy Gillespie’s big band. Then, there were the solo albums. He released the first one in 1955 and kept them coming for years. He is still considered one of the best that jazz has ever seen, and he’s certainly one of the most famous people to ever grace Houma.

Quvenzhané Wallis

Do your kids love the movies “Beasts of the Southern Wild” or the “Annie” remake? If so, let them know that the star is from Houma. Quvenzhané Wallis is only 14 years old, but she’s already secured some of the biggest film roles in Hollywood, and they keep coming. She even caught Beyoncé’s eye. She was in the music video “Formation” and the short film “Lemonade.” Pretty impressive for a local girl, isn’t it?
