When you live in Houma, you have the best of both worlds. You’re close enough to New Orleans to attend Mardi Gras and other fun events, but you can also escape the hustle and bustle of the big city whenever you want. It’s almost time to get some use out of your close proximity to the Big Easy. Mardi Gras 2018 will be on Tuesday, Feb. 13, and the parades are set to begin in January.

So far, Mardi Gras parades are set for:

  • Jan. 6, 27, 28
  • Feb. 2–4
  • Feb. 7–13

If this is going to be your first Mardi Gras, follow some insider tips to ensure you get the most out of the experience.

Join a Walking Krewe

Mardi Gras is the biggest party in the South, if not the world, and you don’t want to sit on the sidelines. You want to be a part of it, and you can by joining a walking krewe. Walking krewes are parades that are open to anyone. Just show up before the start time and march along with the others. Many of the walking krewes have themes, so check out the theme beforehand. Then, you can dress accordingly.

Use a Parade Tracker App

Mardi Gras parades are huge affairs, and it’s not unusual for them to roll later than scheduled. That can cause you to sit on the sidelines for a long time, waiting for a parade to roll by. Get a parade app, like the WDSU Parade Tracker, to see where the parades are in real-time. Then you’ll know if you have time to get a drink or some beignets before the parade rolls by.

Plan an Escape

The crowds are fun, but they can also be a little intense. You might want to escape from Canal Street for a bit, but at the same time, you don’t want to go all the way back to Houma. New Orleans is full of places that will give you a break from the Mardi Gras action. Have some bourbon and oysters at Kenton’s or relax for a bit at Bar Tonique. Then, head back to Canal Street and get your party on once again.

This is going to be a wild Mardi Gras. You will likely zip back and forth to New Orleans, and you need some wheels to get you there and back over and over again. That’s where Barker Buick GMC in Houma, Louisiana, can help. Stop by and check out our huge inventory of new and pre-owned vehicles. Take one out for a spin around Houma and drive your favorite home today. Then, you’ll be ready to attend Mardi Gras and so much more.
